"Boston - Where Men are Men and the Meat is red" -ä in the early Eighties to provoce was surely an important stylistic means for the originally Hardcore-movement in the Irish impressed Eastcoast-metropole. Bloody fights with rivaled New Yorker guys, the unconditional keeping on the Straight Edge-dogma, an (avoidable) inclination to an unreflectated patriotism –the just 20-headed Boston crew about legendäry bands like SS DECONTROL, DYS, JERRY'S KIDS, GANG GREEN and NEGATIVE FX was in the beginning as famous as notorious. In truth, an unexpected musical and ideological variety conceals behind this tender facade.

The present encyclopaedia does not only touch off the evolution of the most important Bostoner hardcore-bands in the Eighties but also let the protagonists themselves get a word: in exclusive original interviews. Musicians like John Sox (THE F.U.'S), Al Barr (THE BRUISERS, DROPKICK MURPHYS) or Dave Smalley (DYS), labelchiefs (Curtis von Taang! Records), touringmanagers (Marc Nickel from M.A.D.) and reporters (Al Quint from Suburban Voice) make alive a piece of music-history. Even these anecdotes trancendentate »This is Boston not New York« from a tedious reference book to an iridescent szene-reader. On 176 well-shaped pages the reader among other things finds out:

  • why STRAIGHT SATAN renamed himself in SLAPSHOT before "Back on the Map"

  • which band first decaesed the song "Enter Sandman" on vinyl: METALLICA or THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES

  • that Springa, leadsinger of SS DECONTROL, shows very early his love to Grand Guignol Theater, as he - while he was singing the song "Police Beat" wearing a guard uniform - throwed a bloody pighead in the audience
